describes one of the numerous fundraisings during the First World War asking for money to support victims of war as social insurances did not exist yet. A charitable group (for example The Red Cross or Jugenddank) mostly sponsored the nails and the organisation of the nailing campaign itself and managed the money. They nailed with gold, silver and iron nails corresponding to given samples especially iron crosses, coats of arms, military signs and pillars, military men, soldiers and historic figures at organised events. Special nailing campaigns were carried out in schools. The nailing of war landmarks started in March 1915 in Vienna with the ‘Nail Men’ and continued in April 1915 in Darmstadt with the nailing of the ‘Iron Cross’. In 1915 the creation of most of the nailing objects is detectable. They ended fairly abruptly in the third year of war, when the need for material came up slowly and the confidence in victory dwindled in view of the huge material battles in 1916 in Verdun and Somme due to huge losses of people. The last currently known nailing of an iron cross is dated from 1918. In the Third Reich the nailings revived in connection with the Winterhilfswerk but they did not find wide appeal. Old post cards are to be found from both epochs.
