The `Italia Marittima`, once called `Lloyd di navigazione´, has its headquarters in Trieste, Italy. The company has been known under its new name `Italia Marittima´ since March, 1st, 2006. `Lloyd di navigazione´ descended from the Austrian Lloyd, founded back in 1833. Trieste has been pertaining to Italy only since 1919. It was in that year that the company was renamed `Lloyd Triestino´. The Italian state administered the company until 1921. Only then did it become clear that the company did not fall into the hands of the allied forces that had won World War I. The company began transporting passengers again, after it had lost so many vessels in World War I. Until 1931, the company’s fleet increased to 43 ships. And yet, before the First World War, the proud company had taken pride in 65 ships. The biggest ship was the `Victoria´. It was launched in 1931. Then, the Second World War brought about even heavier losses. The ships, for the most part, were deployed as troop ships and hospital ships. There is one picture on historical postcards showing the `Wien´. That ship sank on March, 14th, 1941, after it had been bombed by the British RAF. Enthusiasts like to collect such postcards with their so much sought-after historical illustrations.
