`Italia di Navigazione S.p. A.´, also known as `Italian Line´, was a shipping company that had passenger ships and provided passages over the Atlantic to North and South America. Founded in 1937, the company is the result of a merger of three shipping companies, which were `Lloyd Sabaudo´, `Navigazione Generale Italiana´, and `Cosulich STN Lines´. Outstanding ships, such as for example the SS `Giulio Cesare´, the MS `Augustus´ and the SS `Roma´ belonged to the company’s fleet. `Italian Line´ had suffered many losses of ships in the Second World War. Only four ships came out of the war undamaged. It was in 1947 that the company started to operate commercial lines again, renaming itself `Società di Navigazione Italia´. The most famous ship that joined the fleet at that time was the SS `Andrea Doria´. There are really many historical postcards with pictures of it. The `Andrea Doria´ could carry around 1,200 passengers and 500 crew members. It is worthwhile to collect illustrations of this vessel which was the biggest and fastest one of the Italian fleet in the 1950s.
